All of the dogs listed below are currently available for adoption or foster care.
Our adoption fees include the following:
All of the dogs have been assessed by an accredited dog trainer so that we can make the best possible match for the dog's new home based on social skills, house manners, energy level, health requirements, temperament and training. Although we try to make the most accurate analysis of each dog in order to find it the best home, Shiba Scout Rescue cannot guarantee a dog's temperament, future actions or future physical condition, as they too are creatures of free will.
Adoption fees are based off of the age of the dog and also whether the dog appears to be a pure bred Shiba Inu or a Shiba mix. Younger dogs or puppies have a higher adoption fee because younger dogs find homes; older dogs get looked over. Ages are estimates assessed by a licensed veterinarian unless the dog is received as an owner surrender where exact age is documented. Adoption fees help to cover the cost of all of the dogs in our care and are considered a donation to the rescue. Adoption fees are subject to change at any time and are non-refundable.
Puppies 6 months of age or younger (extremely rare): Pure bred $525.00; Mixed $450.00
Puppies 7 months of age to 1 year old: Pure bred, $400.00; Mixed $350.00
Adult Dogs 1 to 3 years old: Pure bred, $350.00; Mixed $300.00
Adult Dogs 4 to 6 years old: Pure bred, $275.00; Mixed $200.00
Senior Dogs 7 to 9 years old: Pure bred and Mixed, $175.00
Senior Dogs 10 years of age or older we do ask for a donation of $50.00.
Dogs with medical conditions that need current and ongoing treatment (ie. dogs who suffer from juvenile glaucoma or cataracts, epilepsy, incontinence, etc.) will have a lowered adoption fee depending on their condition. Adoption fees will NOT be reduced if the dog has a medical condition that is stable or does not need current treatment or surgery, ie. luxated patellas, heart murmurs, etc.
Shiba Scout Rescue can also accept a $100.00 non-refundable deposit to hold a dog for you, after the initial application and home visit have been approved,if you cannot afford the entire adoption fee up front. However, the dog will remain in Shiba Scout Rescue's care until the adoption fee is paid in full. Failure to complete payment of the adoption fee in the time allowed will cause the dog to be immediately taken off hold and put back up for adoption.

Kato (kah-tO), which means "changing old into new" is a pretty ten year old pure bred Black and Tan female Shiba we took in on October 29th after she had been used as a private breeding dog. She is doing well crated, good with the other male Shiba he has been with, in addition to one of her daughters, another female Shiba in rescue and the director's female Shih tzu, and loves the attention and affection of people including children. She seems to ignore cats if they don't run but she will go after small animals, kittens too. She was not much of a house dog and only allowed inside to whelp her litters and will need work with potty training.
Since coming into rescue Kato is doing great with potty training and asks to go outside. She tolerates her crate but you need to still put her in and she will whine at first but will settle down within a few minutes. We are feeding her in the crate for her to associate her meal in the crate but she would prefer a home that she could be loose and only left for short periods of time. But if she has to be crated she can be. She is fine with short chain link fencing and enjoys her walks.
Kato is spayed, fully vaccinated and will be microchipped and receive a dental before being placed for adoption. She has also had blood work done and has a clean bill of health. We are only asking a small donation of $50 for Kato's adoption fee.
Etsuko (the t-s is like saying "hot soup", so it is pronounced eh-tsoo-kO), which translates to "joy" and "child", is a sweet, spunky and a tad shy 1 1/2 year old pure bred Red female that came to us after being a private breeding dog. She came in with her mother, father, and a couple siblings and was never inside of a house, walked on a leash or been around other dogs except to breed.
Etsuko will need work socializing with other dogs, crate and potty training. She is warming up to people and seems to ignore cats. She also has been reintroduced to her mother and father and does well but has now had a few spats with her mom since moving foster homes and has also met a female Shih tzu and another female Shiba in rescue that she does fine with. She did meet Kosai, our male Shiba/Chihuahua mix and instantly did not like him.
Etsuko is great in her crate and goes right in. We feed her in the crate for her to associate good things with it. She is also potty trained and will go to the door to ask out but being so young and new to the whole living in a house bit, she would not do well being left alone loose in a house unsupervised. She does great in a yard with even shorter chain link fencing. She likes walks but doesn't know how to react to all the cars and bikes and noises that she encounters and will cower and/or spin because she never saw these things when growing up so an apartment may not be best unless she can be walked somewhere quiet that isn't on a main road or street.
Etsuko's adoption fee is $350.00 which covers her spay, deworming, distemper/bordatella/rabies vaccinations, as well as a microchip and training course.

Puppy mill dogs are very different from other dogs in that they come to us never before knowing how to walk on leashes, wear collars, being inside houses, using stairs, hearing every day household noises like appliances, etc., and some have never once been petted for affection or even felt grass on their little feet. These dogs grow up in cages or dog runs with one purpose: produce puppies for pet stores. Once they can no longer serve their purpose, they are euthanized, usually with a method called "heartsticking" where dishsoap in injected into their heart via syringe.
Dogs at mills are treated like livestock and living conditions are usually gut wrenching. But at the end of the day, we need to remember that we as humans created dogs for companionship, not to be stuck behind bars being completely ignored, and also that we as humans can end this as long as we make a vow NEVER TO PURCHASE PUPPIES FROM PET STORES OR OVER THE INTERNET!!!

Kyuukai (key-yoo-kI), which means "long cherished hope" is a little guy at 15 pounds who was surrendered by his owners to Denver Municipal Animal Shelter on May 9th for fighting with their other dog over food or toys. He is 3 years old and a pure bred Red male Shiba Inu. Shiba Scout Rescue took him from the shelter on May 10th. He is a bit fearful and stressed out and will need some time to settle in to a new home. He seems so far pretty sweet but also on guard. He was probably abused heavily as he flinches easily when hands are raised.
Kyuukai is a very special dog who needs a quiet home that can work with bringing out his confidence. We will not just let him go to anyone. Here is what Kyuukai needs in his new home in order for the transition to be successful.
~A home, not an apartment, with a fenced yard
~He must be allowed to be loose in the house, he does not do well crated at all
~Ideally a doggie door so that he can get outside when alone as he can have separation anxiety
~Another calm well adjusted dog in the house that is also left out loose who can show him the ropes and keep his mood calm
~No young children
Kyuukai is an extreme cuddle bug once he knows you won't hurt him and he loves going outside for walks, hikes, camping, you name it. He is potty trained and the fencing in his yard can be really any type, short chain link or wood. He is good with other calm dogs but will growl at dogs that annoy him. He goes to the dog park frequently and as a result he is really coming out of his shell and is learning to play with other dogs. He is also good with cats.
Kyuukai does get very wheezy from time to time with his breathing. He may have a dog form of asthma which gets aggrevated by the season changes. This is a chronic condition that may need treatments from time to time that include antibiotics to prevent secondary infections, and cough suppressants.
Kyuukai's adoption fee has been reduced from $350 to $250 since he will most likely need continuing medical treatment for his respiratory issues. His fee includes his neuter, microchip, deworming, distemper, rabies and bordatella vaccinations, and a professional training course.
Kyuuka (Q-kah) is the last of Izumi's puppies. The pups are also Shiba/Wheaton Terrier mixes as "dad" was also Izumi's "brother". Kyuuka is a black and tan female.
Coming to rescue is the first experience Kyuuka had ever had outside of the house she was born in. She had never worn a collar, walked on a leash, or met people or dogs outside of those that lived in their house growing up. She had never met cats or young children. Because of this she is incredibly fearful and acts similar to dogs we receive from puppy mills. She will need experienced, calm, patient owners who can bring her out of her shell.

Meet our first intake for 2012! This is Zurui (zoo-dee), which means "foxy" in Japanese. Zurui was originally surrendered by her 2nd (at least) owners to the Boulder Humane Society because they lost their house. She was adopted out but turns out the girl that adopted her tried to give her as a gift to her parents, a gift they didn't want, so she was returned. Then she was adopted again but returned for showing aggression towards their cats and dogs (which she's given the grumpy snarls of an old Shiba but if one knows Shibas then one would understand). And she was adopted out a third time only to be returned because she snapped at someone because they tried to very roughly move her off the couch by her scruff--again, if you know Shibas, you just don't do that.
Zurui is settling in nicely to rescue, getting along with other calm dogs as well as cats, and showing me that for being 9 years old she is still quite spunky, and A BALL DOG!!! Who knew?!?!
Zurui does experience seizures from time to time and she will need an owner that understands her needs and can cover the expense of her medication each month in addition to regular blood checks. Her pills are around $20 a month at this point.
Yorikou (yO-dee-kO), which means "to cuddle with" in Japanese, is a 1 1/2 year old Shiba Inu/Basenji mix, possibly a bit of Lab in there, too, that we pulled from Denver Animal Shelter on Christmas Eve. He is very shy but very affectionate once he trusts you. Does great with crate training, potty training, shorter fencing, and other dogs. Prefers men to women and would do best in a child free home. He wasn't sure about cats when he first came into rescue but is getting more and more used to them, just seemed like he was never exposed to them. This boy just loves to follow you everywhere and curl up at your feet or if you let him on the couch under your arm. Such a sweetheart!
These little Shiba mix puppies are only 7 weeks old. They are sister (left) and brother (right) that came from a high kill shelter in New Mexico. A Puppy's Voice was kind enough to pull them and get them to our rescue. We believe they are mixed with Blue Heeler (Australian Cattle Dog). They will be getting names soon. The boy has a cough right now that he will need to get over and both will be spayed/neutered before they are available for adoption. They will also come with a 6 week group professional training course.
Ryuu (lie-you), which means "dragon" in Japanese, is a young puppy just over 4 1/2 months old. He is a pure bred Cream male Shiba Inu. Ryuu is a very very energetic boy who loves to play and he is a big jumper so he needs work on that. He is good with other dogs, as long as they can tolerate his energy level, cats, and people though he may knock over children or scratch them up trying to jump on them. He is working on basic commands and crate training. He already appears to be potty trained. Ryuu will become available once he is neutered and microchipped.
APPLICATION RECEIVED! HOME VISIT PENDING!
This pretty boy wandered into someone's house in Aurora on New Year's eve and helped himself to their cat food. They reported him missing to Aurora Animal Shelter and posted an ad on craigslist and no one came to claim him. One person came to look at him in case it was their lost Shiba but sadly no. He has now been transferred up to Shiba Scout Rescue.
Hitoshi, which means "even tempered", is estimated to be approximately 1-2 years old and is Red in color, possibly Sesame (hard to tell his coat is super thick right now). He is doing well with other dogs, cats, even children. He scratches at the door to ask outside so he appears potty trained though we haven't had him very long. He doesn't wish to go into her crate but once he is placed into his crate he eats his meal and is perfectly quiet.
Hitoshi's adoption fee will be $350.00 which will include his neuter, microchip, preliminary vaccinations, deworming and a training course or seminar.
The dogs listed in this section are being privately rehomed by their owners or other rescue organizations. Shiba Scout Rescue is not involved with the adoption or placement of these dogs and does not warranty or guarantee the dog's current or future health, condition, temperament or actions.
