Our Available Dogs!

All of the dogs listed below are currently available for adoption or foster care.  All dogs have been spayed or neutered, have their distemper/parainfluenza/parvovirus vaccine, have been dewormed, microchipped and will come with a professional training course to be taken at a local PetSmart unless they are 7 years or older.  Attending the training course after adoption is required and proof of graduation/completion of the course must be received within 6 months following the dog's adoption.  Senior Dogs 7 years or older will not come with a training course but complimentary training and behavior consultations following adoptions are always available for every dog.  Senior dogs 7 years or older will also be given a dental if necessary.

All of the dogs have been assessed by a professional dog trainer so that we can make the best possible match for the dog's new home based on social skills, house manners, energy level, health requirements, temperament and training.  Although we try to make the most accurate analysis of each dog in order to find it the best home, Shiba Scout Rescue cannot guarantee a dog's temperament or actions as they too are creatures of free will.

Adoption fees are based off of the age of the dog and also whether the dog appears to be a pure bred Shiba Inu or a Shiba mix.  Younger dogs or puppies have a higher adoption fee because younger dogs find homes; older dogs get looked over.  Ages are estimates assessed by a licensed veterinarian unless the dog is received as an owner surrender where exact age is documented.  Adoption fees help to cover the cost of all of the dogs in our care and are considered a donation to the rescue.  Adoption fees are subject to change at any time and are non-refundable.

Puppies under 6 months of age (extremely rare):  $475.00; Mixed $400.00

Puppies 6 months of age to 1 year old:  Pure bred, $400.00; Mixed $300.00

Adult Dogs 1 to 3 years old:  Pure bred, $350.00; Mixed $250.00

Adult Dogs 4 to 6 years old:  Pure bred, $300.00; Mixed $200.00

Senior Dogs 7 to 9 years old:  Pure bred and Mixed, $150.00

All Senior Dogs 10 years of age or older do not have an adoption fee, however donations are greatly appreciated.

Dogs with medical conditions that need current and ongoing treatment (ie. dogs who suffer from juvenile glaucoma or cataracts, epilepsy, incontinence, etc.) will have a lowered adoption fee depending on their condition.  Adoption fees will NOT be reduced if the dog has a medical condition that is stable or does not need current treatment or surgery, ie. luxated patellas, heart murmurs, etc.

Shiba Scout Rescue can also accept a $100.00 non-refundable deposit to hold a dog for you, after the initial application and home visit have been approved,if you cannot afford the entire adoption fee up front.  However, the dog will remain in Shiba Scout Rescue's care until the adoption fee is paid in full.  Failure to complete payment of the adoption fee in the time allowed will cause the dog to be immediately taken off hold and put back up for adoption.

but you will surely change the world for that one dog."

  • Kenta- Shiba of the Month!

Kenta, which means "strong and tall" in Japanese is a Red male Shiba Inu/Basenji mix that is approximately 1-2 years old. Kenta came into us as a stray the week of Thanksgiving from the city of Broomfield so nothing was known about his prior history.

Kenta is extremely energetic and active. He loves playing with other dogs and would benefit from a canine companion to play with. He does well with all people, including children, but may knock over youngsters under 5. Due to his playful nature, he also thinks that cats should play with him, but he can be a bit over excited about wanting to chase them if they do not agree.

Kenta is working on potty training and crate training. He must be crated during the day and at night or he will get bored and become destructive. He still vocalizes and chews on the crate but with time and patience, he is improving. Putting a blanket or sheet over the crate helps because he can take his frustration out on the blanket and not the crate. Kenta needs a 6 foot wooden fence. He was also fostered in a home with a doggie door and did well. We do not recommend him in an apartment. He would be a great hiking or jogging partner but like any Shiba, or Basenji, should be left on a leash.

Although Kenta is an active boy, he also has an extremely sweet side to him.  Once he has been worked with, he will calmly lay at your feet or curl up and take a nap next to you on the couch.  He will let you pick him up and carry him and let even a young child mess with his face, feet, tail, you name it.

Kenta is neutered, microchipped, dewormed, received his distemper combo vaccine and will come with an 8 week professional training course. He already knows "sit" and "shake". His adoption fee of $250.00 will be discounted by $25.00 while he is our Featured Shiba of the Month!

  • NEW POSTING! Tamiko

Tamiko (tah-mee-kO) is a 4-5 year old pure bred Cream female Shiba Inu that came to us from a puppy mill in Kansas in early February.  Tamiko was kept in an outdoor dog run her entire life, breeding to produce puppies for pet stores ever since her first heat at 6 months of age.  She had never been inside a house, met other dogs besides her mate or her pups, or walked on a leash.  After being shown what life is like as a pet in her foster home, Tamiko is ready for her forever home.

Tamiko is still a little shy but does come up to people, both men and women, in search of pettings.  She loves to sit next to her people on the couch or on the bed but she is a big girl at nearly 40 pounds so she will put up her front paws onto the couch and expect you to do the rest.  She likes meeting new dogs but tends to do better with other female dogs than males every now and then, though she has seemed to mellow out when it comes to male dogs since being spayed.  She would benefit from another dog in the house to help show her the ropes but it is not required.  She has not been assessed with cats or children but would probably do fine with either, especially with children over 10 years old.

Tamiko is crate trained and walks well on a leash so she would be a great apartment dog.  She does not have accidents inside but does not know yet how to ask outside so a routine is a must in her new home.  If in a yard she needs a 6 foot wood privacy fence to avoid any possibility of escape.

Tamiko's adoption fee of $300.00 includes her spay, microchip, deworming, distemper combo vaccine and an 8 week Beginner training course.

  • NEW POSTING! Kouki and Ukemi

Kouki (kO-kee), which means "happy and shine" in Japanese, and Ukemi (oo-keh-mee), which means "passive", are two pure bred Shiba Inus that were surrendered in February due to their owner no longer being able to keep them after a divorce.  Kouki is 6 years old and is a Sesame Pie-bald male and Ukemi is a 5 year old Cream female. The two have grown up together since they were puppies and we would like to find them a home to be adopted into together if possible.

Kouki is a very happy-go-lucky kind of personality.  He loves everyone he meets.  He is good with women, men, children and other dogs.  He is currently being fostered in a home with a cat and does well.  He likes cats and will try to play with them if he doesn't have another companion to play with.  Kouki is potty trained and working on crate training.  He does vocalize in his crate as he has not been in one since being a puppy, however if he is in the bedroom of his person at night and crated next to the other dog in the house he settles down much faster.  Kouki does well with a chain link fence and loves to play and go for walks!

On the left is Kouki and on the right is Ukemi

Ukemi is Kouki's opposite.  She is a quiet and gentle soul that takes a bit of time to learn that someone is alright.  Ukemi does not seem to have a preference for women vs. men.  She has been around visiting children in her previous home but we don't recommend her go into a home with children under the age of 10 as they may startle her.  She is good with other dogs though she may occassionally let out a growl if she is chewing on a rawhide and want the other dog to leave her alone.  She prefers calmer dogs because of this and is not much of a player.  Ukemi is in a different home than Kouki and she has not been fostered with cats to see how she would do with them.  Ukemi is also potty trained, using a doggie door in her foster home and loves her crate which is a plastic enclosed brand.  She also does well in a chain link fenced yard and enjoys sitting out on a nice day and watching the world go by.

Both Kouki and Ukemi are fixed, microchiped and been dewormed and received their distemper combo vaccines.  Each dog will come with an 8 week training course.

Kouki and Ukemi can be adopted out seperately for an adoption fee of $300.00 each, or if someone would be able to adopt them out together, their adoption fee would be $450.00 as a pair.

  • Shai

Shai (shy), which means “shy” in Japanese, is a 1 ½ year old Cream neutered male Shiba Inu mix that came into rescue from the Denver Dumb Friends League Buddy Center in Castle Rock Colorado. He came in as a stray so nothing is known about his prior history. Shai was extremely fearful of the leash and would whip his head around while biting at the leash and fall over. He is very sweet but can be weary of new people.

Once Shai gets a good sniff of you, with a few treats and pets, you are his best friend.  He will climb into your lap and give you kisses.  He is sweet, affectionate and an overall quiet boy.

Shai was initially very afraid of the leash and would whip his head around and bite the leash any time it felt tight.  With time, and daily walks on a harness with a chain leash, Shai has been able to begin to overcome his fears.  He may still occasionally bite at the leash if he gets startled but is much better than when he came to us.

Shai is crated trained and working on potty training.  He will go to the door to go outside but then may get distracted, begin to play in the yard, and them come into the house and go potty.  Leaving him on a leash in the house and monitoring his activity outside will help to ensure that potty time comes before play time, which is what his foster mom is now working on.

Shai is good with other dogs and cats.  Because of his scared nature, we do not recommend him in a house with children under 10 years.  Since he is quiet he would probably make a great apartment dog, or if in a yard would need a 6 foot wood fence.

Shai’s adoption fee of $250.00 includes his neuter, deworming, distemper combo and bordatella vaccines, microchip and 8 week Beginner Course.

  • Kouin

Kouin (kO-in), which means "Father Time" in Japanese, is a 9 year old pure bred Red male Shiba Inu that was one of the 8 Shiba Inus that came from the puppy mill operation in Kansas.

Kouin is initially still shy of strangers but is good with both men and women once he warms up to them.  He has not been assessed with children or cats.  He is potty trained and crate trained. He is used to being in a yard with a 6 foot privacy fence and we do not know how he would do in a yard with chain link fencing.  Kouin walks well on a leash and also likes other dogs.

Kouin's adoption fee of $150.00 includes his neuter, dental, deworming, distemper combo vaccine and microchip.

  • NEWLY RELISTED!!!  Nakimushi

Nakimushi (nah-kee-moo-shee) is a 4 year old pure bred Red male Shiba Inu.  Naki came to us all the way from Minnesotta.  Naki has a history of food aggression which caused his owners to look for a better home for him.  He had been previously alpha rolled as a mechanism of discipline in his home which made his behavior worse.  Naki felt that he needed to defend his food or resources even more and would become so tense that even when fed a treat and touched his whole body began to shake out of fear of being punished.  We have been working on this issue with Naki and feel that he is ready for his new forever home.

Naki is really a sweet dog and in the right home will flourish.  Once he warms up to you, which doesn't take much but a calm demeanor and treats, he will lean his head into you for pets.  He loves to be rubbed under his ears and around his jaw and neck.  When he gets super comfortable, he will roll onto his belly for a good scratch.  He will also give your hand kisses as you pet him.

Naki grew up with a female Corgi but he was never socialized with other dogs outside of his home.  Because of this Naki gets very vocal and if he gets close enough to another dog on leash he will lunge out and possibly bite.  However, if housed with a very calm dog, his size or smaller, he does very well.  He has been around an 11 year old Pug and a 2 year old Shih tzu with no problems.

Naki is potty trained and crate trained.  He does best if a treat is tossed into his crate when he is put away or if he is left on leash and lead into the crate.  Naki really enjoys being outside but can get a bit anxious and worked up over too many sights and sounds so we recommend he go to a home with a 6 foot privacy fence.  He would also do well in an apartment as he has been fostered in one previously.

Here is what Naki needs in his new home to make him a wonderful companion:

    • Naki needs to be crated when the family is not home or is sleeping.
    • Naki should be fed his dry food in his crate.  If other pets are in the home, food should not be left out loose.
    • Naki should only receive food chews like bones, rawhides, hooves, etc. in his crate.
    • Naki should never be petted while eating until proper instruction is given by his training instructor on how to do this successfully.
    • For the first few days in his new home, Naki should be hand fed canned food in order to form a bond with his new family and to establish that hands bring food, they do not take it away, nor do they bring punishment.
    • When out, Naki should be walked on a Gentle Leader Head Halter.  This helps enormously with the leash aggression that he shows towards other dogs when he is out.
    • If he needs to be disciplined or if Naki goes near or gets an item or food in his mouth that he can't have, tell him "Leave It" sternly, or if that does not work, use a squirt bottle filled with water.  Naki should never be punished physically and should never have an item ripped out of his mouth.  You can also offer him a "trade" for the item he has with something like cheese or lunch meat.  This way Naki learns that by giving something up he gets something better!

Naki's adoption fee of $300.00 includes his neuter, deworming, heart worm test (negative), distemper combo and rabies vaccines, microchip and 8 week Beginner Training Course.

  • KiiKii

KiiKii, which means "squeak" in Japanese, is a pure bred Black and Tan male Shiba Inu that originally came into Table Mountain Animal Center as a stray in June.  He was adopted from TMAC only to be returned in September for suspected separation anxiety and escaping the yard.  Since KiiKii came in as a stray he has been assessed by three veterinarians and we estimate his age to be anywhere from 3-6 years of age.

After KiiKii began to settle into his foster home and was properly assessed, we do not feel that he actually has true separation anxiety like previously thought.  He has never made an attempt to escape out of his foster parents' yard nor has he been destructive in their home when left alone, even for several hours.  KiiKii does tend to become very fearful and will pace, whine and try to hide when there are thunderstorms or even the sound of storms or loud noises on the TV or radio.  Considering that our state sees the most storms during the summer months, we believe that this is what was actually causing KiiKii's anxiety in his short term home.

KiiKii is potty trained and used to using a doggie door in his foster home.  We feel that a doggie door in KiiKii's permanent home would be beneficial so that if he were to become stressed, he could come and go as he pleased and would not feel trapped in or out of the house.  He is also used to a chain link fence at least 4 feet high, however it may be best for him to have a yard that has a 6 foot wooden privacy fence.  KiiKii does not do well crated and will scream and cry and will even go to the bathroom in the crate out of panic.  This is something that we are continuing to work at but again if he had a doggie door we do not feel that KiiKii would have to be a dog that was crated when left alone.

KiiKii is a very sweet boy and does well with women, men, children, cats and other dogs.  He loves to curl up at your feet or better yet on the couch next to you if you will let him.  When he wants something, he will "squeak" quite loudly at you, hence his name.  It is not so much a "shiba scream"; it more sounds like a pig squealing at you.  He will do this when he wants attention, affection, food or to go outside.  Because of KiiKii's vocals, we do not recommend him to be in an apartment.

KiiKii does have a torn ACL (Accute Cruciate Ligament) in one of his back legs.  He can be stiff from time to time and should not have extensively long walks.  He has had x-rays and it has been determined that surgery is not needed, however KiiKii has put on some weight in his foster home since being in rescue and really needs to loose it so that the extra weight does not cause any additional damage.  KiiKii will need to be fed a high quality, low calorie dog food to keep the weight off and would benefit from glucosamine tablets to cushion the joints in his leg.

KiiKii's adoption fee of $300.00 includes his neuter, distemper combo and bordatella vaccines, deworming, microchip and an 8 week Beginner Training Course.

  • Kuma--ADOPTION PENDING

Kuma, which means "bear" in Japanese, is a 6 1/2 year old male Black and Tan pure bred and papered Shiba Inu. Kuma was originally a breeder in a puppy mill back in January of 2008 and was allowed to develope glaucoma in both his eyes because he was never taken to a vet.  Each of Kuma's eyes eventually went blind and have now been both removed as they were causing a continuing amount of pain.  He had his second eye removed in late November and is healing very well.

Kuma was adopted out last December and unfortunately came back to us in September of this year due to his owners getting separated.  His mom felt that the change would be too stressful so she returned him to us so that we can find the best home possible for him.

Kuma is extremely cautious and needs a patient and quiet home that will let him come out of his shell. He really needs another dog that he can follow around and build his confidence. He is also good with cats, but children tend to scare him into hiding. He is crate and potty trained and does well with a 3 foot chain link fence. Although he does not need to be crated, having a crate gives him a sense of security so that he knows where his bed and safe spot is.

Once Kuma warms up to you it is totally worth it as he is a real sweetheart.  Kuma will actually slowly climb up onto people that he knows and enjoys being picked up and held.  Kuma loves car rides and walks.  He also loves a good bone or cattle hoof and likes to stash and hide squeaky toys even though he does not actually play with them.  Kuma does not get onto furniture but he would like a big cushy bed to call his own.

We are asking a small adoption fee of $50.00 for Kuma but we would appreciate any donations towards paying off his medical bills.  He does not need any ongoing care or treatment.  He has been neutered, given a dental back in spring 2008, and received his distemper combo vaccine.  We are not requiring Kuma to take a training course.

  • COMING SOON!

    Louie

Louie has just joined us at Shiba Scout Rescue from South Dakota and will be letting us know more about him soon!

    Kiyoshi

Kiyoshi is a young male Shiba that came to us from Table Mountain Animal Center.  He is working on his social skills with dogs, being handled by people and dealing with some minor food aggression before he is ready to be put up for adoption.

    Tamiko

Tamiko is an adult female Shiba Inu that used to be a breeder in a puppy mill in Kansas.  She is very shy but continues to improve daily in her foster home.

Also look for Yamasan and Mizuki, Tamiko's male mate and daughter!

  • Shabu is a Red neutered male Shiba Inu/South Korean Jindo mix weighing about 35 lbs, 5-6 yrs old, that was found running the streets of Denver a couple of years ago.

Shabu is currently being fostered through Evergreen Animal Protection League.  He has been fostered for over 2 years!  He has been adopted out 3 times but returned after his adopters did not take the advice of his foster parent.  His foster mom has 2 Akitas that do not like him and have gotten into major fights with him and as a result, he needs to find either a new foster home or his forever family. Can someone help?

Shabu needs to be with submissive dogs, small or large, preferably female and no cats.  His foster mom has 2 small Poodles that sleep with him and they keep the house neat and clean until she gets home. Shabu needs another dog as a companion especially when left alone because he cannot be crated. If crated he becomes very anxious and has been able to break through the bars and get his head stuck.  He loves to go on walks or runs, do most anything for treats, and knows a few commands such as "sit" and "down".  He is unsure of new people and will bark and hide before he gets to know you.  He is not recommended in a home with kids.

If you are interested in adopting or fostering Shabu, please contact Evergreen Animal Protective League at 303-674-6442
